Indian Fort Lookout

The classic first hike — a steady climb to sandstone cliffs with sweeping views over the Appalachian foothills.

About this trail

Indian Fort Lookout is the most popular hike in the Berea College Forest and the perfect introduction to the Pinnacles. From the Berea College Forestry Outreach Center & Indian Fort Theatre trailhead (2047 Big Hill Rd), a wide, well-maintained path climbs steadily through hardwood forest before splitting toward the lookout. The final stretch gets rockier, ending at open sandstone cliffs with sweeping views over the Appalachian foothills. Most hikers complete it in about an hour. Trails are free, open dawn to dusk, hiking only (leashed dogs welcome). Cliff edges are unfenced.
