South of Berea, Farristown and Middletown are historic communities founded by Black families in the 1800s with the support of Berea's abolitionist founder John G. Fee. The neighborhoods carry a deep Appalachian and African-American heritage that remains a point of pride for longtime residents. Today the area is quietly residential, with country roads, family land passed down through generations, and easy access to town via US-25. The nearby Farristown Industrial Park is one of the area's employment centers.
