Founded in 1855 as the first interracial and coeducational college in the South, the college charges no tuition — every student works through the labor program. The campus is open to the public, with free tours, concerts at Phelps Stokes Chapel, art at the Doris Ulmann Galleries, and student craft demonstrations. The surrounding streets are quiet, leafy, and steeped in history.
